Styles of the Rainbow

Photography by Sean Pressley

When I first spotted this sequenced pencil skirt, I walked past it several times. On the first pass, I just looked at it with admiration. On the second, I touched it. But the third time, I picked it up, held it to my hips. I had to have it.

Being one who rarely wears bright colors in the spring or summer, I questioned how often would I wear it this fall? How can I justify adding this piece to my collection? Not only is it bright, but it’s an actual rainbow. At this stage in my life, I don’t need to have “a rainbow outfit”. So, now the challenge is to change the tone of the look each time I wear this skirt.

And just like that, I welcomed this challenge and am eager to explore the many styles of this rainbow!

At Night

A pencil skirt can be one of the sexiest garments a woman can own. It will hug the curves, giving extreme feminine energy and will prompt massive sex appeal. Because of its basic elements, it is an easy go to for date night. For this look, I paired my colorful love with a slinky black tank that has a low scoop back, a ¾ length blazer with a peplum bottom, black leather sandals, and a sparkly knit beret .

At Day

I wanted to soften the skirt's intensity by bringing down its feistiness. I went for more of a classic vibe and there is nothing more classic than the white button-down shirt. This versatile item can be worn with any thing and to any event. Here, I chose to pair the universal shirt and vibrant skirt with a cognac knee boot and winter green leather moto jacket. In the end, I feel this look is where classic Americana meets AfroPunk and I. Can. Dig. IT!

At Chill

Just because comfort is the goal, that does not mean that style and self-expression should be neglected. Perfect for weekend strolls through libraries or visiting that long-lost friend that moved to Jersey. The skirt with a loose sweatshirt and classic sneakers, is the perfect merger for these ventures. Though the skirt is long, its side slits and snug fit balances out the volume of the top. Adding a large pair of thin hoop earrings and oversized top knot completes the chill vibe.

In case you were wondering, being in the Bryan Park library for this post has absolutely NOTHING to do with any components of this article. Truth be told, I just really love this place and wanted to capture some photos here in my new favorite skirt!

For the all of the above reasons, I acquired this colorful skirt, love it dearly and have zero regrets. I look forward to the other ways that I can style this rainbow.
